Sweet 16

We didn't get a chance to properly celebrate Kezia reaching this milestone yesterday so today we fixed that. Kezia had two of her friends over for her birthday supper of choice (take out Chinese).

We finished the meal by sampling those amazing cupcakes that I picked up yesterday.

Kiandra and Kaden took over the candle lighting duty...apparently it was a two person job!

16 years...wow...time flies.

Boxes, Baskets, Burgers, and Beauty

I was able to duck out of school early today because my class had gym at the end of the day. This allowed me to swing by and pick up a box birthday treats for our 16 (???!!!) year old daughter.

Then it was off to Kaden's first basketball tournament game where the game ended with not many baskets scored for Kaden's team:

The team families went to A&W for a burger supper before their next game. It must of been good fuel for their next game because they were able to score a few more baskets in their 7:00 game...like this one:

and Kaden's foul shot (thanks ref for totally blocking my camera's view ;P)

Even though this score still looks pretty bad, it doesn't show that at the half Kaden's team was down 31-7 and managed to close the gap considerably in the second half.

While Kaden and I were busy at the tournament, Conrad spent the evening at our church's youth event which was a father/daughter date night. I stole this picture from Kezia's Instagram and I thought Conrad was pretty lucky to share his evening with this beauty on her 16th birthday.

How can you not love Grade 1...

I totally love my job. Some days I love it more than others but every day is filled with surprises...like this one that cracked me up today.

Each month I have my grade 1 friends work on a "morning job" book as they arrive and settle in and wait for announcements. It serves a number of purposes like giving them a focused task to begin the day to prevent craziness, reinforces different skills, makes me connect with each child to start every day because I check their work and "smiley face" their page before they read or partner read until everyone is done.

This month, my morning job is word families. I give them a word family and they fill in a few words that they can spell based on that day's family. For example if I wrote "If I can spell "at" then I can spell:" and I might see words like cat, bat, sat, chat, etc. This group of students has become very creative like adding "instruction" to the word family "in" (Instruction is a word on our wall and they copied it). They have added "Stella" to the "ell" family. I have seen  many creative things but today's topped them all:

Today's word family was "ot"

and one of my grade 1 friends wrote out our grade one blogspOT address as one of the words in the "ot" family! I literally laughed out loud at his creativity. Every day is full of surprises and I loved today's hilarious one.

In the van...

Today was the kind of day I love...a whole lot of busy-ness and a whole lot of time with the kids. These days are becoming more and more of a rare thing in the last few years as the kids are spread out between 2 schools and we have added another driver to the mix. However today was like the old days...

The van was a little fuller as Kiandra gave up her last free day before semester 2 starts tomorrow to volunteer in my class. It was awesome to have her come on a full "no-prep" day where I could give her tasks that normally wouldn't happen because I'm teaching all day and not sending my kids off to music or gym or French or German. (Day 5 can seem kind of long sometimes, lol!)

After our busy day at school, Kiandra and I drove out to Kaden's basketball game to watch his team lose (unfortunately) before we picked up Kaden to drive him to hockey. After we dropped him off, we drove to grab a quick supper before I drove her to kid's club. I had planned to go back and pick Kaden up from hockey but Conrad didn't end up having the errand that he thought he did and so because he finished work at the same time Kaden needed to be picked up, he stopped by the area that is just down the street and picked Kaden up.

I did a bit of craft shopping at Michaels and then I went back to church and finished all my marking while I waited for the girls to be done. Kezia had soccer practice after clubs and so I drove her to practice. Kiandra had a clubs meeting so after dropping Kezia off, I went back to pick up Kiandra. Then we went back to the practice to pick Kezia up. On a usual Wednesday, I end up giving Kiandra the van before clubs and I never have to do this part. It's probably a good thing gas is sitting at about 79.9 right now.

I'm thankful for my kids. I'm thankful for these times in the van with them as we chat and I get to spend some time with them. I'm thankful for a reliable vehicle.

Not really BSQ...

...but still a good deal on stuff that is not usually on sale.

I was at Lululemon picking up a gift card for a certain someone's birthday on Friday when I happened to notice some men's wear on sale. Conrad bought a pair of shorts from Lululemon a few years ago (also on sale) and they are still in perfect condition. I saw these on the rack:

With this tag:

So after a few pictures texts I bought them for Conrad (and they fit perfectly!)

I also found they had a selection of headbands on sale:

They are still a bit pricey at $7 but I've paid full price for a few before. I bought one for Kezia for her birthday, 2 for me, 1 for Kiandra (saving it for her birthday), and even 1 as a gift for Kezia's friend. I guess when I paid my final bill, including the gift cards, I didn't really feel like a Bargain Shopping Queen but I still think I got a good deal on the things I bought.

Catching up

A few short months ago, I could lean in and hug my son and still be noticeably taller than him:

Today, he is just shy of being my height!

Crazy-ness!

Zero in Two

Kezia played soccer today at 9:00am. Her team has tied the last two games and was hoping for a win in this 3rd game of the finals.

Even with some great chances and some amazing saves from her team's goalie (including a hand ball penalty kick right in front of the net!) they didn't manage to pull off a win.

Final score: 1-0 for the other team.

Kaden's team played at 12:40 and it was a hard battle. Kaden had a few shots on goal and so did many of his teammates (including one that actually went in off a player's foot but was called a no goal).

First goal for the other team squeaked in during the second period on a power play. It was followed by a second goal on another power play.

Final score: 2-0 for the other team.

Some days are like that....

Stand....everywhere

I have chosen the word "stand" as my word of the year and I've been spending some time thinking about it and adding quotes and other "stand" things to my Pinterest pin board.

Here are some quotes and photos I've found on instagram with the hashtag "stand":

Did you pick a word to focus on this year? Are you searching it out? What have you found?

Family Fun Golf Night

Our school hosted a family fun night and it was a huge turn out from both of our campuses. Kaden hung out with his friends and I spent time with many of the families. I was able to snap a few pictures of Kaden as they were the last group to make their way around the greens:

Kaden even had a chance to try out the virtual golf:

It was a fun and busy night.

So close!

Kaden's basketball team had another game today. The score stayed close the entire game with barely a two point spread at any time.

Going into the last quarter the score was tied:

However, the other team pulled ahead in the last few minutes and the game ended with a final score of 37-30 in favour of the other team. :(
