News from here...

Around our house I find...

...university bags and a travel mug that belong to Kezia

...that my van is in use by Kiandra's journeys to and from and I'm stuck using Conrad's (gas-guzzling/no decent cup holders/big-as-a-house) van to get too and from work. (and yes I realize this is a #firstworldproblem and that I should just be grateful we have a second vehicle to get to and from school while my van is being used.)

...bags are packed and ready to go! Kaden leaves for his music festival trip tomorrow at 4:00 in the morning.

Our first University Student

In February, Kezia was invited to be a part of the High School Enrichment program at University. For 1 week, she will attend classes and get an idea of what university is all about. She got to choose 5 courses and got accepted into her third choice "Chemistry in the Marketplace" for this week.

Kezia's first day of classes was today and she had a good time. She said it was so different from high school and she felt really independent. She knew a few people that are also attending this week when they all met together because the program treated all of the students to a pizza lunch today.

It seems so strange how old my kids seems right now...Kaden is making final preparations for a school trip as part of a choir experience. Kiandra is still hanging out on the set for her job and gets in at all hours of the night...Saturday morning she drove home at 5:30 in the morning! And now Kezia is a university student! How time flies!

First soccer game of the season

I was able to get home in time from my weekend away to make it to Kezia's first game of the outdoor season and it was a cold one! There was still snow on the sidelines!

After a LONG 80 minute game the final score was 0-0. It hardly seemed worth it to be sitting there the whole time!

Teacher Peeps Saturday Fun

One of my favourite places to eat in the States is Smashburger!

Four of us from our group took a day trip to eat there:

Yum, Yum, Yum!

and I was able to get some shopping done too! I had jeans and sunglasses on my list and I was able to check them both off today.

Then we joined the rest of our group for supper where we could celebrate Lindsay's birthday at Ruby Tuesday.

Back at the hotel, we had our usual Saturday night fashion show and it was fun to see the treasures that everyone found. I think the BSQ award was shared with Janice's $270 coat that she bought for $27 and Jill's $170 Fossil purse that she was able to snag for $39. Even if we didn't win for best Bargain Shopping Queen deal, it was a successful shopping trip for all of us.

And we're off....

After an all day staff meeting planning for the coming school year, we deserved a weekend of fun and so 18 staff members from our two schools headed south for a weekend for fun, food, and shopping!

On our way:

We were able to get a few hours of shopping done before meeting at Applebee's for half priced appies at 9:00.

A great start to the weekend!

Day of Pink

It was pink day at school today in support of diversity. We also had a mini "We Day" assembly where the middle schoolers shared their experience at We Day back in October.

Festival of the Arts

This evening was our school's Festival of the Arts- an evening to celebrate visual and performing arts with Art displays and a Music concert. For the first time, it was only Kaden on the program.

He performed with the Grade 7&8 band playing the euphonium:

and with the "Singers" choir

It was a great evening.

The Little Mermaid (take 2)

I took my Grade 1 friends to see the Little Mermaid yesterday morning and tonight I went with my friend Tammy and two of her girls and my kids.

First, I had yearbook after school until 5:00. Then I picked Kaden up from badminton. Then I picked up my girls from the mall (they had early dismissal and were browsing at the mall while they waited). Then we met Tammy and her girls at Qdoba! One of my favourite US food places is now here!

The wait was almost 30 minutes (it's technically 'Fast Food") but so delicious and worth the wait!

And then it was off to the show! We squeaked in just as the lights went down and Tammy would have too if I wouldn't have given her the wrong address (sorry Tammy!) but we did get to enjoy a wonderful performance with amazing costumes and theatre magic to make the actors appear to be swimming. It was a great night!

Monday, Monday

I'm. Tried.

It's been a busy couple of weeks with accompanying Kiandra to set (overnight!) and still keeping up with all of our regular busy-ness. There are still meals to be made. Still badminton, flag football, still soccer practices. Still meals to be made. Still laundry to keep on top of. I put in many hours completing Kaden's birthday book and even a few hours editing my Grade 1 toothpaste commercials. Oh yeah..I'm still working at my day job too.

Today was particularly exhausting. I planned a Monday morning (never my first choice) field trip last month and today was our trip to a live presentation of "The Little Mermaid". It was good. But long. and I was tired.

During last recess, I posted this picture to my Grade 1 classroom instagram page:

Before recess was over, I got an email from the musical director who was asking all teachers who were at the show to remove anything posted to social media. I couldn't believe that it had been discovered so fast and I was wondering what the problem was because you could not really see faces AND the only people following my Grade 1 account are grade 1 families.

I found out later that full video of a few of the songs had been posted which was a direct copyright violation because any video is strictly prohibited. My intention in posting the picture wasn't to violate anything but to show parents what we had experienced that morning and maybe to encourage attendance at their shows the rest of the week. When I apologized profusely when I met the musical director, she looked at me and said it wasn't you…it was another school but we didn't want any videos posted so we just sent it out to everyone who came.

It's interesting how fast a message can spread...

Paska

I've been embracing my "Mennonite-ness" lately by reviving faspa on Sundays and yesterday I made some Paska (using this recipe) to take to my mom's house for supper today. Conrad and Kiandra went to set and Kaden, Kezia, and I went to my Mom's.

The Paska turned out so good and I was glad that I had made another loaf to keep at home!

Sunday's coming

Today is the Saturday between Good Friday and Easter. It was a fitting day for a funeral. It was a time to say goodbye to a coworker.

Just like that Saturday after Good Friday so long ago, today was a time to be sad. It was a day to mourn for what was being left behind....friends, family, 2 sons who will grow up without their mother. It was a day to realize that from this day forward, things would be very different...she won't show up for a surprise visit in a perfectly put together outfit, she won't offer shopping advice, she won't show off her beautiful smile. It was a day to question. A day to cry. A day to try and make sense of the events that led to this moment and why God would choose to end a life so soon.

As believers in Christ, we need to realize that the overwhelming sadness and the uncertainty and the confusion is just for a time and that "Sunday" is coming. The time when all sadness and the confusion will be gone. We have the assurance and hope that God knows more than we do and that His plan is perfect despite our desires for our will to be done.

It was on the way home after the funeral that I heard a devotional on the radio that was perfectly timed for this Saturday of in between. It based on Psalm 30:5 "...weeping may last for the night but joy comes in the morning."

How true it is. Our weeping here on earth is just for a time. Our loss. Our sadness. Our seperation. It is only for a time...Just for the night but then it ends.

Our joy comes in the morning. Our weeping is replaced with joy. It's hard to imagine. However, it's what the Bible promises. God holds us close....on Saturday...and all days... until the joy comes.

Jesus died on Friday.

Saturday was hard.

But Sunday's coming...

All in a Day's Work

...or rather all in a Night's work:

-send selfies to Conrad

-Receive selfies from Conrad

-eat copious amounts of food that is readily available on set. Every day, about 3 hours after call time, we get treated to delicious soup and sandwiches. Today's offerings included split pea and bacon soup and hot grilled cheese.

-Enjoy the view of the set and all of the effort that goes into changing it to reflect the location and Christmas season:

-actually get a glimpse of a camera view of Kiandra in action on the screen before the real star steps in.

-Work on school work (editing Grade 1 toothpaste commercials) and eat copious amounts of snacks

-Hang out with the photo double and her mom and snap group selfies in the waiting room to post on Instagram. (AND one of the stars of the movie "liked" it 15 minutes later!!!)

-wrap at 2:30...home at 3:05am.

Thursday 13

13 things I did today:

1. Finished taping my second last Grade 1 toothpaste commercial.

2. Participated in our Good Friday Easter chapel.

3. Received  Paska for a treat from one of my Grade 1 families.

4. Enjoyed this lovely Easter gift from a school family during our staff meeting.

5. Stayed late because the meeting ran late and then had to rush home to get Kaden to flag football practice.

6. Didn't have time to pick up Kezia from a friend's house before heading out to set with Kiandra.

7. We got a special pink parking pass which allows us to violate street signs during filming days.

8. I was able to see the hospital we are filming at outside of the school trailer window.

9. I actually was bored enough to watch the overtime hockey game while waiting for Kiandra on set.

10. Ate "lunch" at almost midnight and still was able to watch the 3rd overtime winning goal when lunch was over.

11. Spent some time editing toothpaste commercials while Kiandra worked.

12. Enjoyed spending time with this lovely lady while we waited to be wrapped.

13. Finally got home around 3:00am after a very long day!
