I love to Read Month kick-off!

Today was the start of our READING Olympics at school. We are celebrating "I LOVE to Read" month with a full month of events and fun. We introduced the event to our students this morning with a play where I got a chance to play the role of "Svetlana the Sweaty" the Hockey Player from Russia.

It should be a great month!

Kezia turns 15!

Unfortunately, I forgot my camera at school and just have these instagram shots of Kezia. I have to say that it is actually quite shocking that she is already 15...where does the time go?!

I love that my girls have such a great relationship with each other. Tonight, something set them off and they were laughing up a storm and some inside joke that we were not allowed to know. My girls are awesome:

Kezia's favourite Chinese food place is closed for 2 weeks for Chinese New Year and because we weren't able to be back in time on Sunday to sneak in our family dinner then, Kezia decided to have perogies for her birthday supper tonight but asked if we could order in Chinese food once they are open again.

We found these pairs of shoes for our Converse loving girl and she was thrilled:

Happy 15th birthday Kezia!

Flowers for Kezia

So...I was freaking out for a moment when I got this text from Kezia today...

I was thinking who is this 'David' that's giving Kezia roses for her birthday and why in the world have I never even heard his name mentioned before...I just couldn't believe that some guy that I've never heard of is sending Kezia flowers...then I remembered that Kezia had been babysitting and that's where the flowers had come from :) She's a spoiled girl!

Got crams?

I use the Words Their Way spelling program with my grade 1 friends. It helps teach them connections between words and to identify "oddballs" within a particular word pattern. (Such as when "give" does not follow the same "bossy 'e' rule" as words like "five" or "dive"). Anyway, I always go over each of the words with my students in case their are any words they don't know so that I can give them an explanation. This week, one of my groups has the word "cram". When asked if anyone knew what it meant, a student raised his hand to say "You might say "cram" in the getting stuffed into it." and everyone laughed. I also told them that Kezia (who had been a reading buddy for this class and they all know her) was having big tests called exams this week and lots of times students will "cram" for an exam or stuff their brains with things they need to know. That evening I got this email from one of my class parents:

While [student's name] and I were studying for spelling, he tells me that Kezia has crams. She gets it from high school. I took a moment to make the connection and then tried really hard not to bust a gut laughing.

Grade 1s are awesome.

Snow Morning

This morning we stopped at Tim's for some fuel before heading home:

The roads were clear and dry and even the border crossing was easy with just 1 car ahead of us. I texted my principal after we crossed and told him I could make it in for the afternoon and he said ok. I was actually hoping he'd say just stay home but I was back at school by the time the bell rang for the afternoon. What an adventure!

Game 4 and starting the drive home

Even before Kaden's morning game, there were rumours of the weather taking a turn for the worse. The game looked like it might, for the first time all weekend, be a win for Kaden's team. At the end of the first period it was 0-0. The second period finished with a score of 1-0 for them.

Half-way through the 3rd period, Kaden took a nasty turn into the boards when another player's stick got in his skate. I had some moments of panic when he didn't get up right away. Kaden joined back in the game after sitting out a few shifts.

We left right after Kaden's game to try and make it home before the roads got too bad...

After driving for over an hour, we stopped for lunch and even in the city, the visibility was brutal and we made the decision to spend the night.

Our decision turned out to be a good one because shortly after the highways home were closed. We were able to facetime the girls back home and most of Kaden's team ended up at the same hotel and so the boys were pumped to get another day together.

Tournament Games 2 and 3

The day started early with a game at 8:00 which meant being at the arena at 7:00. That's early for a Saturday...and "vacation". After a pep talk from the coaches they were set to play:

In the first period, Kaden's goalie had 29 shots taken on him...and 6 had gone in. Kaden's team had taken 3 shots and 1 had gone in. The score did not accurately reflect how hard Kaden's team was working. After the first period, Kaden's goalie was experiencing the same sickness that Kaden had and he was taken off the ice and one of our players went into the net instead. Thankfully, the other team was easy on us for the rest of the game and the refs let the time just run. Our team was having fun with the mix up in positions and the coaches let anything go. Some of the defence players went forward and they were able to enjoy the game. The parents cheered for every goal that our non-goalie player stopped and we were able to pull off one more goal to make the final score was 10-2.

Unfortunately, the third game didn't produce any different results. Game 3 ended with a score of 8-0. The boys didn't seem to let the losses affect their mood and they still had a great time back at the hotel playing mini sticks and enjoying the pool.

Tournament Game 1

Kaden was feeling a bit better by the afternoon when it was time for his game. Kaden's team didn't play so well against today's team and the game ended with a 9-1 final score.

The boys didn't seem to let the tough loss affect them too much and they enjoyed a team dinner after the game and Kaden was feeling well enough to spend some time in the pool before bed.

Fortunately, Unfortunately

Fortunately, I was able to get a day off tomorrow to head south for Kaden's hockey tournament.
Unfortunately, we had a staff meeting after school and I had to wait until it was over until I could leave.

Fortunately, the meeting was only late by about half an hour and then I could leave.
Unfortunately, this was an hour and a half later than I thought I could leave and roads were getting a bit blustery.

Fortunately, it was only about a half hour into our drive before the roads got better.
Unfortunately, even with good roads we were still later than expected and didn't make it to Texas Roadhouse for dinner.

Fortunately, Pizza Ranch was a quick and easy supper and we went there instead.
Unfortunately, Kaden didn't eat much.

Fortunately, we arrived at our hotel at a decent hour and all of Kaden's teammates were excited to see him.
Unfortunately, he was tired and just wanted to go to bed.

Fortunately, he was able to fall asleep right away.
Unfortunately, he woke up at 5:00 puking.

Fortunately, he aimed well and I was able to get it cleaned up quickly.
Unfortunately, it was a rough start to the weekend.

Fortunately, the pukey sickness did not last long.
Unfortunately, the weekend had some other surprises. :)

Basketball, Soccer, and a Surprise

Today was Kaden's first basketball game of the season. He played 2 games after school.

Unfortunately, they lost both games but had a great chance to develop their skills. (All but 2 of the players are playing basketball for the first time). Kaden managed a few goals...baskets?? and I even caught one on video for Conrad to see.

After the game, and a quick supper at Subway, Kaden and I went to pick up his cousin Victoria (and her 2 boys) who came out for a visit with a plan to surprise Conrad's parents.  We picked up Kiandra and Kezia from Kid's Club and then met Conrad and his parents at the soccer pitch. Conrad's parents were sure surprised to see Victoria and the boys! We were able to watch Kezia's team play hard...

...but they didn't pull off a win and ended the game with a 3-0 final score. :(

Here is Kezia with her fan club at the game this evening:

I think that's my head!

See? This photo just came up on the Heaven is for Real facebook page...I'm pretty sure that head under the "So, I believe" is my head! Kiandra found it and that is where I was sitting and I'm pretty sure it is me. We are excited about seeing the movie when it comes out.

30minutes - day 2

As part of the biggest loser challenge I am doing, there is a weekly challenge and this week it is to get 30 minutes of physical activity each day. I was pretty proud of myself for getting on the treadmill BEFORE I headed out to GNO. I ran 3 miles in 33 minutes (again!) and completed day 2 of this challenge.

A win for the coach!

After a string of losses, Kade's hockey team finally pulled off a win this afternoon. They played hard against the number 1 team and managed to score 2 goals in the second period and Kaden assisted the second goal. The other team scored late in the third but didn't manage to score a second one to tie it up. One of the Dad's from the other team was keeping track of the shots on goal and Kaden's goalie did an amazing job stopping 28 shots and the other goalie only had 12 on his net.

Kaden also spent 2 minutes in the penalty box.

They called it a win in honour of their coach and were excited to share the news with him.
