Musical 2014

Barely recovered from the Fall drama, Kiandra (and Kezia) are jumping right into musical season. This year's production is the musical "Crazy for You" and auditions this year included a monologue, a song, AND a tap or dance routine.

Kiandra did her audition at 4:10 and Kezia did hers at 4:17. I asked the girls to snap a picture of themselves and they remembered:

After they got home from youth, Kiandra checked her email and she got the notice that she has a callback for Monday night and the only instructions were to "bring your tap shoes". Her desired role is a show girl and so she was pretty excited about that request. The cast list is revealed on Wednesday and practices begin Friday. Here we go again...

On the sidelines

Kaden had round 2 of volleyball finals after school. I missed game 1 but found out they had played their worst game ever and ended with a final score of 25-4. I arrived half way through game 2 and the score was 18-10. They ended up squeaking out a 25-21 victory to bring on a third round which they play to 15 (but have to win by two). It was the closest game I have ever watched and had a chance to make it to the finals on the line. I began to make sounds like a wounded Chihuahua as the score went back and forth and back and forth.

In the was a WIN!! and the boys move on to the finals on Monday!

Then it was off to the sidelines of one of the few Wednesday night games that Kezia has been able to make. I had to pick the girls up from the place where they were having their Kids Club windup and so Kiandra had to come to Kezia's game too.

It was a close game until the end when Kezia's team scored an extra insurance goal to secure their lead and the game ended in a 3-1 victory.

Grey Cup Party

Although watching football finals is not my idea of a good time.....hanging with friends and snacking is. So while the game was technically on, we spent more time visiting than talking and that was fine by me. We enjoyed touring family friend's new house and a great evening together with a few other families from our church. The big prize went to Saskatchewan:
and it was a final score of 45-23 against Hamilton. Honestly I didn't even really know the teams that were playing before we got to the party.

I brought this:

1. Preheat oven to 350° F (175° C).
2. Combine all ingredients until well-blended and spoon into Epicure’s Baker.
3. Bake 20–30 minutes, or until heated through.

Catching Fire Date Night

Kaden has been looking forward to the release of Catching Fire since we watched the Hunger Games movie. I pre-booked our tickets on Monday for today's show. Since the girls have not read the books (nor are they interested in reading them) Conrad, Kaden, and I went together. The theatre was very full and it was strange to be able to select our seat ahead of time. We still arrived 40 minutes early to print out our tickets and grab some popcorn before the show began.

The verdict: Conrad and Kaden thought the movie was better than the book.
and I thought the book was better than the movie. However, we all enjoyed the movie and are looking forward to Mockingjay part 1 next Fall and Mockingjay part 2 in 2015. It's hard to believe Kaden will be in High School when the final one comes out ...I wonder if he'll want to go to opening weekend with his parents for that movie??! ;)

Report Card Day

Well...even with all the changes, frustrations, hair pulling, and cards on the new system at our school went home today. It was also 50th day at school--I do like to pack it all in but today was a bit overwhelming even for me! :)

Anyway, sometimes in the thick of getting all my reports done, I almost forget that my own kids get theirs too. It's just Kaden with me at school now but to say his report card was good is an understatement. He has had a magnificent start to Grade 7--he simply adores his teacher and that I think does inspire him to do his very best. Kaden received an Honours award for having all marks above 80%.

His lowest mark was a tie between Science and Social Studies with a mark of 82%:

His highest mark was also a tie and a surprise because it was math and music with 95%:

We've been pretty hard on Kaden with his practicing this year because he doesn't have an excuse to forget practicing anymore. Our school has 2 euphoniums (1 for the student to keep at school and 1 for home) and so he can never "forget" it and not be able to practice. When I pointed out Kaden's music mark he shrugged and said "haa haa....I guess it does help when you practice". Funny how that works! ;)

Pig Dog (Schweinehund)

This evening, we were finally able to see the play that Kiandra's drama group has been preparing for since September. They've been practicing every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday from 3:45-6:00 and Saturdays from 10-2. Of course, this last week they've lived at school as they have prepared for this week of shows. They prepared for 4 matinees and 4 evening shows. Today was the day that worked for us to attend.

Truthfully, a play named "pig-dog" didn't really pique my interest and if it had not been for Kiandra's involvement I probably wouldn't have been interested in going but it was so good. It was an original play about a woman named Kay and her experiences in second World War and a pilot named Jack and his ultimate sacrifice during the same time. The play was so emotional and was brought to life in a really vivid manner when the scenes were interspersed with images and sounds projected on a large screen behind the actors.

Kiandra played the role of Kay's brother:

A polish worker captured by the Nazi regime:

and a party guest:

this outfit was her favourite one to wear!

We were able to get seats in the third row and family friends were able to come out for the show this evening as well. After the show, we all went to Menchie's for some frozen yogurt to celebrate.

It's another win!

We're nearing the end of the volleyball season. Today, the Grade 7&8 team played their last game of the regular season. They won the first match 25-14, lost the second 25-19, and won the last match for a win! With this win, they finished 2nd in their division. Playoffs begin next week! Go Eagles!

November 19

I love November 19. Love it. I even love the lead up to it as the weather changes because it makes me nostalgic for that November 19 so long ago....

It was the summer before I entered Grade 7 (so yes...I was younger than Kaden is right now!) that I first started my crush on Conrad. I am a little obsessive and truthfully I might even admit that I have stalker tendencies :)  I guess there's that fine line when you have a crush---between flattering and restraining order ;)

Anyway, I was a boy crazy girl with my eye on one prize. After YEARS of patiently (or not so patiently as those around me at that time can attest) it finally happened and HE. ASKED. ME. OUT.

November 19, 1991 it was a reality. I can remember the day so vividly. I also remember that it was a Tuesday just like today. I remember the excitement of our new relationship and dreaming about the future. I remember being able to say that "my boyfriend" was in the audience when I was performing in a school play the following night. (I find it so strange that Kiandra is preforming in our old high school's fall drama this week, just like I did 23 years ago... but unlike her mom, she is not boy crazy and will not have a boyfriend in the audience) It almost feels surreal that I can have such vivid memories of that day so many years ago.

I'm so thankful for November 19 and the chance that I had to say yes to the question I had been waiting for and dreaming for. This picture is one of my favourites from our dating days. Kmart always had these cheap picture packages and so on our 1 year anniversary I asked Conrad to go and have our picture taken professionally. This was from our 2 year anniversary session:

We look so young! In this picture we were 2 years into our dating relationship, and still 1 year away from becoming engaged and 2 and a half years from the day we would get married. November 19 always brings me back to the memories of so many happy memories. *happy sigh*

However, the celebration of the beginning our relationship was not on the agenda this evening. Instead, it was volleyball for Kaden with our school's Grade 6 and 7 team. It was the last game of the season for this team.

Then it was a supper date at Kaden's favourite fast food place: Pita Pit.

and then we were off to his hockey game.

November 19--A time to reflect on the good things that I have in my life after a particularly stressful time lately. I have so many things to be thankful for...a strong happy marriage with the love of my life, healthy kids, a full and busy life...God has given me so many blessings I do not deserve and yet He's given them to me anyway. I am so blessed and lucky.

Monday, November 18, 2013

I used to laugh at Conrad because he is not a fan of change. He's more of a "same-old same-old" kind of guy. He orders the same thing at a restaurant, he drinks the same drinks, he even asks for some of the same Christmas gifts every single year. Me...I always thought I loved changed. Lately, I've discovered that maybe I'm not a fan of change either.

There have been many new changes in my life in the last few months:
new high school student
new (emptier) van ride to school
new chauffeur schedule for after school activities
new principal
new fall drama involvement
new batch of students
new needs
new driver in the house
new staff meeting schedule
new report card system
new expectations
new way of leadership
new rules
new strategies
new frustrations

Change happens. I get it. I don't like it...but I get it. Things can't and don't stay the same. Today was a tough day. I've decided I hate change. I want "same-old same old" back. It worked for me and it was predictable and it was familiar.

Another Win!

It's such a different start to the season for Kaden's team this year compared to last year. Today, they won their evening game with a score of 3-1. Kaden's new goalie had another round of "Disney moment" saves where the save seems to play out in slow motion.

Their season record so far is 5 games played, 3 wins, 1 loss, and 1 tie with 13 goals for and 7 against....and a 1st place spot in the city league so far.

The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe

Our church put on a Children's Drama production this evening. The sets and costumes were amazing. My kids chose not to be involved but two of Kiandra and Kezia's very good friends were and so it was fun to see the results of all their hard work.

Kezia and her friend Jenna. Jenna played the role of Mrs. Beaver.

Kiandra and her friend Kara. Kara played the role of Susan.

We really enjoyed taking in the show as a family and it was pretty amazing that the performance was completely sold out which means 1200 people came to the show!
