Power Words Workshop for Parents

This evening the K, 1, and 2 teachers at my school presented a workshop for parents. We have been using Megan Milani's research on developing reading skills and it is working well in our classrooms. We wanted to present this to our school parents to help them partner with us to develop skilled readers at home and at school. My part of the evening involved making these bookmarks for parents....

 lots and lots of bookmarks!!

Tonight we shared about the "Power Words" system and the three strategies we are focusing on to help emerging readers become confident and independent readers. We took turns highlighting our experience with Power Words and how we use them as a tool to help children feel like readers which helps them become readers. It was great to have so many parents come out.

We hope that this will help parents partner with us and that children hear the same message at school and at home. Here's a close up of the reading strategies bookmark that went out to parents (-along with a copy of the powerpoint that we presented as a team.)

I think the event was a success...even though I was very nervous before -and during!-the presentation. I hope the parents that came learned how they can help their child.
